Important details support and explain the main ideas of paragraphs or passages.
Skills Tutor gives the following as strategies for finding the important details:
1. Identify the main idea. Look for details that are examples that support or explain this idea.
2. Think about why the author wrote the passage. Look for details that support the author's point.
3. If a detail can be left out without changing the meaning of the passage, it is probably not an important detail.
Some people find it easier to find the important details and then define the main idea. Others need to find the main idea first and match the important details to this main idea.
