Author's Purpose - Questions

Yesterday, I asked "Why is it important to figure out the author's purpose?"

On some standardized tests, you may be asked questions about the author's purpose.

Examples:

1. This article was probably written to:
A help readers manage stress (inform)
B teach readers to separate fact from fantasy (inform)
C encourage people to become relaxation teachers (persuade)
D tell people how to succeed in the workplace (inform)

The article gives specific actions that one can take to reduce stress. The title of the article is "How to Beat Serious Stress". Clearly, the answer to this question is A.

1. Is the author writing to inform, entertain, or persuade? Clearly in this passage the author is giving information. The Main Idea is Stress can be beaten by doing specific things. Only A and C deal with the subject matter. A is to inform and C is to persuade. The best answer is A.
