But, people write for many different purposes - to inform, to entertain, or to persuade. The next time you read something, ask yourself, why did this person write this? Newspaper articles could be written to give information. Editorial passages could be written to inform or persuade the public. Magazine articles could be written to inform or entertain.
Use these strategies from Skills Tutor to help you identify an author's purpose for writing:
1. As you read, think about whether the author is writing to inform, entertain, or persuade you.
2. Factual details, dates and definitions usually tell you that the author is writing to inform.
3. How does the passage make you feel? Do the author's words inspire or entertain you?
4. What is the main idea of the passage? Why is this main idea important to the author?
